In boules and pétanque – the balls you use are an important part of the game. There are several types of boules depending on how and where you want to play.
Competition Boules
Competition boules are officially approved for matches and used by both serious hobby players and professionals. Their features include:
- Made of steel (stainless or carbon steel)
- Weigh between 650–800 grams
- Diameter between 70.5–80 mm
- Often have a grip pattern or texture to improve control
Competition boules are balanced and certified to ensure fair play. Some are designed specifically for different play styles, such as pointing or shooting.
Leisure Boules (Hobby Boules)
Leisure boules, also called "backyard boules" or "garden boules," are simpler and often used for casual games at the park or beach. They usually:
- Have lower precision and quality
- Sometimes contain sand or other fillings
- May be made of cheaper metal or plastic
- Typically come in a standard size and weight regardless of the set
Leisure boules are great for fun games without the need for competition-level equipment.
The Jack – "Cochonnet"
In addition to the large boules, you also use the jack (called cochonnet in French), the small wooden target ball that is thrown first. The jack is usually made of wood and is about 30 mm in diameter.
Summary
Whether you're playing in competitions or just having fun at the park, there are boules for every level.
If you want to take the game more seriously, investing in quality competition boules will give you better precision and a longer-lasting set.
