What are the rules for adjusting the playing area in pétanque?

Pétanque is often played on gravel or other uneven surfaces. A big part of the game is adapting to the natural conditions of the terrain. However, there are clear rules for when and how you are allowed to adjust the playing area.

What is allowed during the game?

  • You may adjust the spot where you stand and throw.
If there is a mark or uneven spot where you need to place your feet, you are allowed to smooth it out before you throw.

  • You may flatten a previous landing mark.
If a ball has left a mark on the terrain and you believe it could affect your throw, you are allowed to flatten or fix that mark. This can be done by the player who is about to throw or by a teammate.

What is not allowed?

  • You cannot generally improve the playing area.
Smoothing out gravel, removing stones, or otherwise preparing the terrain to make it easier for your throw is not allowed during an ongoing round.

What about after the round is finished?

Once the round is over (all boules are thrown and the points are counted), both teams are allowed to adjust the terrain in the area where they have played. This includes removing marks left by boules or preparing the surface for the next round.
