What is Boule – and What Exactly is Pétanque?

Boule is a classic ball game played all over the world – and especially popular here in Sweden. The goal is to throw metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden target ball, often called the jack or cochonnet. It’s easy to learn, social to play, and suitable for all ages.

But did you know that boule is actually a collective name for several different ball games? The most well-known version is called pétanque – and that's usually what people mean when they say they’re “playing boule.”

Boule vs. Pétanque – What’s the Difference?

  • Boule is a broad term that includes several games with different rules and styles.
  • Pétanque is a specific version of boule that originated in southern France and is the most widely played form in Sweden and around the world.

In pétanque, you throw while standing still, with both feet inside a circle. The distance to the jack is between 6 and 10 meters. It’s a game of precision, strategy, and touch – rather than strength or speed.

Same Spirit, Different Rules

No matter which version you play, boule is all about the same things: community, focus, and having fun together. On our website, we focus specifically on pétanque – but everyone who enjoys ball games is more than welcome.
